JAMES FRANKLIN ELLIS
and his Family

James Franklin "Frank" Ellis was born abt. 1844 in Indiana1. His parents were listed on his death record as Robert and Mary (Parker) Ellis2.

James married 1st Elizabeth Taylor sometime before 1864. About that year their son Carey Ellis was born. Elizabeth was born 27 Mar 1840 in Indiana and was the daughter of Hugh B. and Mary (Gregory) Taylor3. James served in the Union Army, Co. C, 120th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War4. In 1870 his family resided on a farm next to the farms of Elizabeth's parents and siblings in Richland twp., Fountain Co, Ind.5

About 1879 James moved his family to Remington, Jasper County, Indiana where he engaged in the liquor business with his brother Albert Ellis6. In 1880 Albert was residing with James, Elizabeth, and Carey Ellis in Remington7. The brother's first place of business burned in 1883. They soon had a saloon in a new building and continued their partnership until 1886 when Albert moved to Wolcott, White County, Indiana. James "Frank" Ellis continued the saloon business for several more years in Remington.

James 1st wife Elizabeth probably died before Dec 1892. On 12 Dec 1892 James married 2nd to Cora E. Westfall in Jasper Co., Ind.8

In his later years he and Cora relocated to the Stone Bluff area in Fountain Co.9 During his life he was a member of the Wolcott I.O.O.F. and the Remington GAR. On 3 Jul 1908 he died at his home in Stone Bluff. He was home with his sister Elizabeth at the time of his death. Though his 2nd wife Cora was mentioned in his obituary as a survivor, no mention was made of his son Carey or any other children. It is, therefore, assumed that Carey preceded his father in death.

James "Frank" Ellis was buried in Remington Cemetery. His stone only listed his name and Civil War service. Buried beside him was his brother Albert Ellis 1849-1911, Albert's wife Sarah J. Ellis 1864-1925, and three of Albert's children: Kitty Ellen Ellis d. 21 Apr 1887 aged 3mo 4days, Frank J. Ellis 1897-1916, and Cloyd J. Ellis 1891-1920. No tombstones were found for either of James' wives or of his son Carey.
