Personal Information

Hugh B. Taylor was born 9 Jul 1802 in Virginia1. The identity of his father has not been discovered . However, the given name of his mother was Jane. By 1830 Hugh and possibly his parents and siblings had moved to Sumner County, Tennessee. On 11 Feb 1830 he married Polly Gregory (Polly was a common nickname for Mary) in Sumner County2. In the marriage record He and Alfred Beard posted bond and were listed as being "of Sumner County."

Mary Gregory was born 4 Dec 1810 in Tennessee3. No definitive proof has been established regarding the identity of her parents. However, a strong possibility exists that her parents were William Gregory s/o Richard b. abt. 1764 Mecklenburg County, Virginia and Mary Epperson d/o Richard b. 1765 Tennessee4.

Hugh and Mary remained in Tennessee for at least 4 years until the birth of their first son, William. Between that date and 1840 they moved to Indiana. It is likely they moved to Fountain County, Indiana by 1837 when Hugh's sister married Jacob Hawk/Hock. On 23 Oct 1841 Hugh purchased the E1/2 of SW1/4 of Sec. 15 Twp 20N Range 7W in Richland twp. from John and Elizabeth Leatherman. The transaction was witnessed by Jacob Hawk (whose 1st wife was Anna Leatherman) and Wm. King, J.P. Hugh and Mary made that farm their home for the rest of the their lives.

Hugh Taylor was a farmer and his children lived close to him until his death5. In 1860 he provided a home for his mother Jane and for 2 Taylor children, Benjamin age 5 born Indiana and Luisa age 2 born Indiana6. These children were not his children or grandchildren. Research has not discovered what happened to these probable relatives.

On 3 May 1870 Hugh Taylor executed his will7. He left a bequest of $100 to his brother Allen Taylor. The rest of his estate was to be divided between his 3 children after providing for his wife, Mary. Mary was made executrix of the estate. The will was recorded on 28 Jul 1870. Hugh died on 4 Jul 1870 and was buried in Union Cemetery8. On 28 Jan 1877 Mary followed in death9. With Mary's death, the Hugh Taylor probate went forward on 9 Feb 187710. The inventory at that time reflected the personal effects of Mary. The most valuable personal possession listed was a clock valued at $11.50. James H. Voliva was appointed as administrator of the estate. He had also witnessed the original will of Hugh Taylor in 1870. Within a year of Mary's death, her daughter Mary Melissa (Taylor) Kendall and her husband Silas Kendall died. As a result the Kendall children were included as heirs to the estate of Hugh Taylor. No tombstone has been found for Mary (Gregory) Taylor, Mary Melissa (Taylor) Kendall or Silas Kendall.
