John CAMPBELL was born 13 Oct 1811 in Ohio, the son of Albert and Rebecca (BAKE) CAMPBELL. He moved to Fountain County, Indiana with his parents in the 1820s. He obtained at least three land patents from the federal government for property in the Cain/Richland township area1. He purchased more land in that area over the years.
On 11 June 1835 he married Malinda Frazier at Fountain County. From family records her parents were listed as James FRAZIER and Elizabeth CADE. John and Malinda had seven children. One son, Washington died as an infant. Malinda died on 14 Oct 1856. A "loose" gravestone with her information is at Campbell Chapel Cemetery. This must have been her original gravestone which was later replaced with the larger obelisk which contains the inscriptions for both John and Malinda.
Albert CAMPBELL, his brother, sold John most of his land prior to his death in 1885. On 25 May 1888 John CAMPBELL executed his will2. Mentioned in this will were: daughters Elizabeth CHAPMAN, Sabrina EPPERSON, Mary J. BRANT; son John W. CAMPBELL; and grandchildren Nancy M. FRENCH and Olive COATS. His nephew, Albert CAMPBELL (son of Bake Campbell) was named as executor of his estate.
The 1880 Census3 does appear to indicate that John CAMPBELL remarried. A wife, Elizabeth, age 62 born in Ohio was listed in his household. However, no record of the marriage was found and she was not mentioned in his will.
