Daniel W. NINE was born 6 Feb 18501. He was a successful farmer in the Campbell Chapel area. He was related to the Benjamin NINE family which arrived in Fountain Co., Ind in the 1820s. On 18 Oct 1883 he married Frances Catherine (DANFORTH). She was born 17 Feb 1854. Frances was the daughter of William Rufus DANFORTH and Catherine (MELLINGER) CAMPBELL DANFORTH, widow of Bake CAMPBELL.
Daniel and Frances had four children. Bessie the youngest was born in 1897. When Bessie was only 9 years old tragedy struck the family2. Daniel, though apparently quite successful, was worrying about his finances. He had spent about a year in an institution under observation. His return home ended sadly. He took his own life on 26 Dec 19063.
Frances did not remarry. As passed down in family story, Frances was afraid of electricity. Therefore, their house was not electrified until after Frances NINE's death. She died on 5 May 1948 at their home in Fountain County. Bessie had stated that her father had liked spirited horses and was often hurt when thrown off or when his buggy got away from him. She also passed down a story that her father went to town once to sell a horse. Instead of returning with money, he brought home a set of blue and white dishes for her grandmother.
Bessie took care of her mother and her sister, Rosa, her whole life.
Rosa was never able to completely care for herself.
