Charles Coats was born on 15 Feb 1859, the son of William B. and Elizabeth (Lenear) coats1. He Spent most of his life in Fountain County, Indiana2. He was a prominent farmer living southwest of Hillsboro, Fountain Co. at the time of his death. He was a member of the New Liberty Church and was connected with the Mutual Insurance Co.

On 14 Jul 1878 he was married to Sarah "Olive" Campbell by the Rev. Jacob Dice3. "Olive", as she was known, was the daughter of James and Matilda (Justus/Justice) Campbell. She was born 16 Nov 1859 in Fountain County4. She was a member of the Christian Church at the time of her death.

Charles and Olive had four children5. They also raised two of their grandchildren, Charles and Elizabeth Coats. Charles died on 23 Feb 1926 at his home in Fountain Co. His obituary mentioned that his sister, Laura Clora and brothers, Elmer, Joe and Frank, all of near Veedersburg, were among his survivors.

Olive died at home on 17 Dec 1935. Her two daughters had preceded her in death. Her two sons and her half-sister, L'Ora (Booe) O'Rear were among her survivors. Charles and Olive were buried in a large family area in Rockfield Cemetery, Fountain Co. Several other family members were buried at the same location6.

  1. William Coats b. 24 Aug 1879; d. 3 Jul 1951; buried Rockfieild Cemetery; m. 1st Edna Glascock 24 Dec 1903; She b. 1886; d. 1930; m. 2nd Verita J. Stockdale; She b. 1888; d. 1973. He was a member of the Veedersburg Christian Church7. His obituary listed children: Charles, Eugene, Francis, George, William, and Elizabeth (Coats) Ray.
  2. James Albert Coats b. 7 Mar 1882; d. 3 Apr 1958; buried Bethel Cemetery, Fountain Co.8 He married Hazel Thompson on 7 Ot 19099. he was a Real Estate Businessman. He graduated from Valparaison and Purdue Universities. He was a member of Bethel Church.
  3. Leola Coats b. 20 Feb 1884; d. 10 Dec 1932; buried Rockfield Cemetery; m. Fred Hesler 7 Dec 1905 Fountain Co.10 He b. 24 Oct 1885; d. 4 Jan 1962; buried Rockfield Cemetery. One of their children died as an infant and is buried at the same location.
  4. Ethel L. Coats b. 1890; d. 19 Jun 1920; buried Rockfield Cemetery; m. Lewis Jackson11.
