and their family

William Smith Taylor was born 6 May 1834 in Tennessee1. He was the son of Hugh B. and Mary (Gregory) Taylor. William spent most of his youth on his father's farm in Richland twp., Fountain Co., Ind.

William must have been very interested in the events leading up to the Civil War. he clipped several newspaper articles on those events (particularly the "War in Kansas"). He glued those clippings into a small book which he kept his whold life. When the war did come, his name was drawn for the draft2. However, there was no record of service. Family oral tradition stated that William did not want to fight against his relatives in the South and bought his way out of the draft.

On 11 Mar 1863 he was married to Mary Campbell in Fountain Co. by the Rev. Jacob Dice3. She was the daughter of Bake and Catherine (Mellinger) Campbell. William and Mary had three sons. Their son Benjamin usually used his nickname of "Mack" and their son Albert usually used his middle name of "Elmer" in most records.

When Hugh B. Taylor died in 1877, William inherited part of his father's farm. By 1880 William's family had left Richland twp. and were residing in Cain twp. On 20 Feb 1912 Mary died of a cerebral hemorage4. William spent his remaining years in the household of his youngest son, John C. Taylor. William died of pneumonia caused by influenza on 14 Jan 1917 in Waynetown, Montgomery Co., Ind. William and Mary were buried in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery.
