Personal Information:

James Campbell was born 1 Sep 1773 in New Jersey. He was the son of Obadiah Campbell and Mary Opdyke. James Campbell married Sarah Hoffman on 24 Dec 18012.Sarah was born 12 Aug 1781 and died 22 Sep 18303.

James Campbell spent most of his life in Northumberland Co, Pennsylvania. He died in that county on 18 Jun 1841. His probate listed his surviving children and provided married names for several of his daughters4. Several of James' children, Abraham Campbell and Sarah Campbell wife of Jacob Keller Jr., Robert Campbell, Jane Campbell wife of Jacob Haas and Susanna Campbell wife of William Persing moved to Fountain County, Indiana. At least two children, Abraham and Sarah were in Richland twp, Fountain County before 20 Jul 1841. On that date they granted a power of attorney to Jacob Keller Sr. of Shamokin twp, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. The purpose of the document was to have Jacob Keller Sr. represent them in the valuation and partition of the property of James Campbell of Northumberland and Columbia co., Penn.5

Orphans Court record Vol 8 pg 385 (transcribed by Lois Volence) - The petition of James Campbell, oldest son & heir of James Campbell late of Shamokin township in said County, deceased, by his attorney in fact Obadiah Campbell & Willliam Persing, Obadiah & Abraham Campbell and Robert Campbell, by his guardian Jacob Haas, other son of said dec'd., William Persing & Susannah his wife, late Susana Campbell, Samuel Reeder & Anna his wife, late Anna Campbell, by their attorney in fact Jacob Keller Senr., Jacob Haas & Jane his wife, Martha Campbell, Elizabeth Campbell by her guardian Samuel Reeder, and Joseph Campbell & Barbara his wife, by their attorney in fact John Roadarmel, the said Susannah, Anna, Sarah, Jane, Martha, Elizabeth & Barbara being daughters and heirs of said James Campbell dec'd.  --- Humbly Showing ---that the said James Campbell lately died intestate leaving a widow Sarah Campbell & your petitionors his only children & heirs, and the said intestate died seized in his demesne as offee, of and and a certain messuage & tract of land situated in Shamokin township in said County, adjoining lands of David McWilliams, Elisha Barton, and Obadiah Campbell, containing about twenty four acres, being the mansion farm of said dec'd - also another tract of land situated in said township, adjoining lands of Jacob Keller, James Moore and John Roadarmel, containing forty acres, and also a certain lot of woodland adjoining land of Elisha Barton & others, containing six acres, situate in the township aforesaid. Your petitioners there fore pray your Honor to appoint and order Elida John, Wm Teatsworth, Jacob Swank, Robert McWilliams, David Martz, Amos Vastine, Isaac Tietsworth who are chosen by your petitionors for that purpose to make partition of the premises aforesaid to and among the children & representatives of the said constitute in such manner & in such proportions as by the laws of this Commonwealth is directed, if such partition can be made without prejudice to or spoiling the whole. But if such partition cannot be made thereof as aforesaid then to value and appraise the same and make report of their proceedings herein.
